The name Micah is (of course) Hebrew in origin, meaning "Who is like God?" or "gift from God." Both meanings are significant; the former reminds us of the magnitude of our great God, of whom none of us are worthy, and the latter relates our gratitude to God for both our daughter and our soon-to-be-born son. (Incidentally, Jessica and I each had the jeweler engrave "my gift from God" in French on our wedding bands, though neither of us knew what the other had chosen to have engraved until after the ceremony!)
So, how and why did we choose the name Micah for our baby boy? To tell the truth, a few years ago before we knew that Madeleine was indeed a girl, we were considering both boy and girl names. I think that I was flipping through the Bible looking at names and the book of Micah stood out. Jessica liked the name too, and luckily neither of us had ever taught a "difficult"student with the name Micah.
In anticipation of the birth our son, I thought that I'd take a closer look at the book of Micah and the prophet for whom it was named.
